When we started planning for renovation extension of our house we knew it’s going to be a challenging project with lots of complexities we had a hundred year old house with heritage overlay, under the watchful eyes of the council and the neighbourhood, with lots of unknowns about its infrastructure, and our ambition was to give it a revamp as contemporary as possible, while preserving the charm and identity of the old house. What we did not know was the fact that a neighbour will lodge an objection to our council-approved and fully compliant plans, that the Covid lockdown will heavily restrict our build process, plus the poor quality of the restoration and repair that had been done in the house over the years.

But we pulled off this project successfully, and a huge part of it is owed to having Backyard Buyers and its director, Kathy as our project manager. Without Backyard Buyers it was simply impossible to finish this project within our timeframe and budget, with this quality and design. People were thinking this project at this scale is going to take a year or so to finish. But we started the build process in June and got the keys just in time for Christmas. And people’s guesses about the cost when they see the house is usually close to twice as much as what we spent. Kathy kept going over and above in every step of the project. She dedicated so much of her time being present on site to supervise tradies. She lined up tried and tested subcontractors who were always cost-effective, came up with makeshift solutions and Plan Bs time and again, made sure every piece of work is done properly and held people responsible with her unassuming authority when things occasionally went wrong. At the start Backyard Buyers provided us with a stage by stage build plan, and even multiple lockdowns could not hinder our progress.

Backyard Buyers was essentially the X factor and trump card of our project. It’s going to be very hard to find a house in Melbourne where classic and modern have been blended together this harmoniously. Every passer-by is impressed. The added value to the house has been significant and it’s been a great joy to live in the house in the past couple of months. We can’t thank Kathy enough for the excellent job she and her team have done for us. For anyone wanting a seamless build project, it would be a no-brainer to have Backyard Buyers on board.

I doubt you’ll find anyone with this much skills, dedication and integrity. On our part, we look forward to working with them again in near future in our next adventure.

When we bought this century old heritage house we knew it’s in an almost unliveable state but we loved the location, the character and the potential for a big overhaul. We had a vision to renovate the house in a way that is contemporary in its design and practical in its amenities. There was only one problem. We did not have any previous experience in such projects, particularly this one where we had to keep the exterior of the house intact and the amount of extension we could do was restricted due to council regulation by heritage overlay regulations. And personally we wanted to keep some of the old features of the house.

A huge burden was taken off our minds and shoulders when we met Kathy and got Backyard Buyers on board. From that point on we had the reassurance that our project is in capable hands and as we progressed with the planning we started to get more and more peace of mind. Not because it was smooth sailing, but due to the fact that Kathy had all the expertise and troubleshooting skills to manage this project within our timeframe and budget, despite huge hiccups like Covid lockdown. I think without Backyard Buyers we simply could not do this. Their reliability, honesty and commitment is second to none. Many people had their doubts about how we’re going to end up with this challenging project on our hands.

Now with this review I’m letting the secret to our success out!

We had been thinking about subdividing for a few years and had met with several companies, but our gut told us they weren’t quite right for us. When we met Kathy from Backyard Buyers we instantly felt comfortable and knew we wanted to work with her on our new home.

Building a home can be a stressful and complex process and having someone like Kathy, with her hard work, attention to detail and commitment in our corner was priceless. She was always there to answer questions and sort out any issues that arose. Any details we brought up were dealt with proactively. She went the extra mile and always looked for solutions to our questions or concerns. Having someone dealing with builders and councils was amazing. Having her knowledge and experience made the process so much easier.

The quality of our new home is fantastic, we are pleased with the workmanship and finishes. As graphic designers we have a distinct aesthetic and we were happy that Kathy supported that with giving us options and examples based on our requests. We love coming home each day.

Kathy was an absolute pleasure to work with, and as well as being highly professional, she is friendly, warm and thoughtful and we happily recommend her services.

So happy we found Kathy to get our project off the ground and completed. After being messed around by another company for 2 years we were close to giving up. But now thanks to Kathy’s expertise and perseverance we get to enjoy our new subdivision, plus the bonus of a houseboat with the extra equity.

Thanks Kathy for helping our dreams come true.

We first spoke to Kathy Vant Foort from BACKYARD BUYERS in April 2013 with the idea to rebuild and subdivide our block. This was the first of many visits to us that Kathy made, always at our convenience and either at home or meeting in a coffee shop. We engaged Kathy to manage our project when she presented us with a viable option to turn a small 1950’s 2 Bedroom cottage into 2 x 3 bedroom townhouses on our block.

Kathy was with us all the way, from the initial plans to architectural drawings, submission to council for the planning permit, selection of builders and other trades people involved and helping us to create not only our dream home but an investment for our future.

The benefit of dealing with Kathy was her knowledge and experience and her negotiation skills. Kathy also has a great team of talented people that she works with who specialize in areas associated with a building project such as ours.

When we moved in in June 2015, Kathy was there overseeing the finishing touches and following up with ensuring the local council was approving of all the works and our sub division was finalized.

At all times Kathy was professional and approachable and it was a pleasure to deal with Kathy and reassuring to have her overseeing everything.

We have already referred friends to Kathy for their building needs and we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend her to others in the future.

My name is Christine and I have been extremely happy with the friendly, professional service I received from Kathy from BACKYARD BUYERS. It was such a relief to know she was on top of all the organising of tradies and dealing with council, who I know would’ve tried my patience.

Thank you Kathy, I would recommend you to anyone in a heartbeat.

To Whom It May Concern

In 2010 we decided to subdivide our property and sell the backyard. This would help us to have a holiday, pay off our mortgage and provide funds towards 3 daughters weddings.

After about 8 months we obtained our Planning Permit from the council subject to certain terms and conditions being met. Meeting these various conditions became very difficult, finding tradesmen, establishing the easiest way to approach the requirements, and indeed keeping costs down. By pure coincidence I saw BACKYARD BUYERS sign written ute and that night looked up the website and contacted Kathy VantFoort. She called at our property, gave us some advice and we agreed to have her Project Manage the works required to complete the subdivision and obtain the new titles.

Kathy handled everything for us, even while we were overseas on our holiday and using her services took all the stress and pressure off knowing that she would handle these matters for us. With her experience and knowledge she also saved us money by meeting with engineers and negotiating with council to satisfy the permit conditions.

We found Kathy to be very professional, friendly and prompt and satisfied all our expectations.

I would strongly recommend anyone to contact BACKYARD BUYERS if you are considering subdividing or if you have already started and finding it difficult I am sure she would be able to assist.

With our children grown and both moving away from home we really had no need for such a big backyard. We had discussed many times about subdividing and after hearing about BACKYARD BUYERS on Melbourne radio, we decided to give them a call.

Kathy came to our home, measured our yard, went over everything that was needed to subdivide and we decided to go ahead.

Everything was handled for us and we didn’t have to worry about a thing. It was so easy. Now all is settled and we have the funds to do some much needed renovations to our home.

Thank you to Kathy and all at BACKYARD BUYERS.

After 2 attempts using other companies (and losing a lot of our own money) we decided to give up until my sister heard Kathy’s advertisement on the radio. Our experience with Kathy was fantastic, especially not having to outlay any more money.

Kathy did all the work and paid for it. The tradies used were very professional and punctual. We had to have our home revalued after the subdivision and we were very surprised to find that the valuation actually went up. We still have a large garden which we are able to maintain easily and our passion for the garden has returned. If there was something we did not like Kathy was around asap to discuss.

Thanks so much Kathy and all your team.

The experience of selling my backyard has changed my life. The process was one of excitement and pleasure. It was easy, I didn’t have to do anything Kathy did all the running around for council permits etc. and at the end she paid me for my backyard.

Since then my life has become a lot easier without a big backyard, I still have a garden and the bonus is I have no mowing and more leisure time on the weekends. At my age I can enjoy life more now. Since the sale of my yard I have had the freedom to book a 13 day cruise to New Zealand, buy a new car as the old one was 25 years old and clocked over 3 times or more. I have been able to renovate my home e.g. painting, new bathroom, guttering, balcony and fencing.

All this and looking forward to my new life at 68 years.
